Abstract:
An excavation was undertaken near Rosemarkie, Ross-shire on behalf of Scottish Water to evaluate a group of 39 features uncovered during a watching brief at the site. The features consisted of a series of pits, which included Neolithic and Bronze Age domestic pits, a large Bronze Age corn-drying kiln, a small Bronze Age cremation complex and medieval or post-medieval pits. The Neolithic and Bronze Age pits yielded domestic hearth waste typical of such features. Of particular significance was the recovery of charred bread wheat and flax grains from Neolithic contexts, both normally associated with the large timber halls such as Balbridie, Aberdeenshire. Pottery recovered from across the site included early Neolithic modified Carinated Bowl, middle Neolithic Impressed Ware, late Neolithic Grooved Ware and Bronze Age Beaker and Food Vessel. The Bronze Age corn-drying kiln contained a large amount of charred cereal grain, the assemblage of which was dominated by naked barley. The cremation pits contained inter alia a virtually intact inverted urn and a truncated upright urn. The inverted urn had a unique pre-depositional biography in that a repair to the damaged pot had been attempted using a sherd form a different, but similar, pot. This burial was accompanied by a copper alloy awl and three ceramic beads; two were fusiform in shape and have no Scottish parallel.
