Abstract:
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group on behalf of Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, on a land plot located at Shields Road, East Kilbride. The evaluation was undertaken as the initial part of a phased programme of works required as a condition of the planning consent for the development. The evaluation consisted of the machine trenching of m², 8% of the available development area. A total of 23,291 m2 was originally required; however the presence of mature tree cover in some fields, as well as live services and areas of extremely deep peat/boggy areas, this reduced the area that could be feasibly evaluated. Most notably Field 1 (Figure 1) could not be evaluated at all due to how extensive the peat was. The proposed development was situated in an area of undulating pasture land to the south-east of East Kilbride. Significant drainage works have taken place on the site exhibited in the various rubble and ceramic drains found, hence the extensive bog areas. Overall the site showed little in the way of archaeological potential with their only being evidence of previous agricultural activity in Field 4. Neither significant archaeological features nor artefacts were encountered, and no further archaeological works are recommended in the fields evaluated, although this will have to be confirmed by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, advisors to South Lanarkshire Council. However there is still a requirement for an archaeological watching brief for when South Shields farm is demolished. In addition to this, Field 1 should perhaps also stripped under archaeological supervision.
