Abstract:
A level 2 standing building survey was carried out on 18-19 December 2017 by Alison Cameron and Alice Jaspars of Cameron Archaeology Ltd. Plans and elevations were hand-drawn and a full photographic survey carried out. Areas excluded were the interiors of Buildings 5, 6, 7 and 10 where there was no access. The origins of the buildings are Eastside of Craibstone farmhouse (Building 3) which survives with small extensions and the SW and NW walls of a steading (Building 4) which has been partially rebuilt using stone for the former farm steading building. There is no trace of Woodside of Craibstone (Illus 49) which has been demolished. The cottages (Buildings 1 and 2) and Buildings 7-10 are probably early to mid 20th century in date; the foundations of Buildings 1 and 2 are constructed of Brownhills bricks not produced before 1937. Buildings 5 And 6 are the latest buildings dating to the latter half of the 20th century (Illus 46). The buildings were latterly used by the Rowett Institute. An archaeological evaluation is required on the associated farmland prior to development but it is recommended that no further work is required prior to the demolition of Buildings 1-10.
