Abstract:
A watching brief observed ground breaking works within St Leonards Lodge, (built 1907) at Abbey Walk, St Andrews. Substantial numbers of archaeological features were identified. A subsequent excavation recorded parallel boundary ditches defining linear plots aligned NW-SE, with each boundary containing several tightly-grouped and intercutting ditch features. The boundary ditches closest to Abbey Walk were succeeded by a substantial stone-faced bank. A series of culvert drains and ditches aligned NE-SW both preceded and succeeded the ditches and bank feature. Areas of rough paving were recorded adjacent to the bank as were a small number of pits and post-holes. A large assemblage of Scottish White Gritty Ware and Late Medieval ceramics, Copper-alloy and stone artefacts, bone and slag were recovered from these features.
