Abstract: |
An evaluation using machine trenches was carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd in five areas scheduled for development to the east of East Calder. A total of 116 trenches covering 10,892m2 were excavated. Most trenches contained traces of truncated rig and furrow cultivation. What appeared to be a wide, shallow ditch was located near the junction between Nethershiel Road and Clifton Road. This contained quantities of post-medieval green-glazed ceramic, bones and stones with lime mortar attached. The evaluation also revealed post-medieval ditches and a post-hole, some associated with a post-medieval building and enclosure next to Clifton Road. What may be a undated pit with a sterile fill was also found near Nethershiel Farm. |
