Abstract:
The former United Reformed Church at Tiverton is a large Nonconformist chapel standing on the west side of St Peter's Street, Tiverton, immediately east of the ancient river crossing point at Exe Bridge. The chapel is part of a larger complex of church buildings comprising the former manse, the Memorial Rooms and the chapel. The archaeological works were undertaken in advance of alterations to the furnishings in order to allow the conversion of the disused chapel to serve as a community facility. The existing structure dates from 1831 but occupies the site of earlier buildings recorded in 1687 and rebuilt in 1699. Elements of the earlier buildings appear to survive in the party walls with the adjacent structures. The present interior of the chapel was altered in 1894, when the galleries were reduced in depth. All the seating appears to have been renewed at the same time, arranged in a pattern common to late 19th-century Nonconformist chapels, characterised by the angling of the side blocks of seating to face the pulpit. The Lombard Romanesque architectural styling of the façade would have been highly advanced for the 1830s and may reflect the dynamic ministry of the Revd. W. H. Heudebourck, who may have been his own architect.
