Abstract:
The results of a desk-based appraisal and historical impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for land in Cawsand, Maker-with-Rame, Cornwall. This work was undertaken in support of a planning application. The site is located in the modern civil parish of Maker-with-Rame, within the historic fishing village of Cawsand. The proposed development would be located on a small plot of steeply-sloping land between the back gardens of houses on Garrett Street and New Road. There are documentary references to Cawsand from 1404. The strategic significance of the beaches at Kingsand and Cawsand led to the construction of successive fortifications on the hill between the two villages; Cawsand Fort is the latest (1860s) and largest of these emplacements. In terms of direct impacts, the site is located on steeply-sloping ground below New Road. It is partly terraced and served by a flight of narrow steps to each side, but these features are likely to be 19th or 20th century in date and on balance the archaeological potential of the site is likely to be fairly low; the excavation of the required terrace would have a major effect on any surviving archaeological features or structures.
