Abstract:
Cornwall Archaeological Unit (CAU), Cornwall Council undertook archaeological recording during trenching works associated with a new main sewer at the west end of Mongleath Road at the junction with Bickland Water Road, Falmouth. The line of the sewer trench runs for a distance of approximately 80m from SW 78966 32307 in the west to SW 79074 32323 the roadway being a long-established route from the centre of Falmouth and the Swanpool Valley to the church of St. Budock on its western outskirts. The road is adjacent to the Mongleath Road burial ground that lies to the north. This burial ground was developed by the Quakers, and is especially associated with the Fox and Tregelles families of Falmouth who were historically significant within the Town. Burials commenced in the late 1650s, with the most recent internment being in 2012. The walled burial ground (centred at SW 79028 32326) is a Grade II Listed Building (National Reference 1269987) The work involved excavating a trench that was 1.6m wide and reached a maximum depth of 4m. Five profiles were recorded across the along the line of the trench (Fig 2). Details of these can be found within the site archive. It appears that ground level was planed off down to the natural before the road was constructed. Apart from some modern services no archaeological features or artefacts were recorded. It was concluded that the trenching had very little or no impact on any significant buried remains.
