Abstract: |
The archaeological investigation comprised of eleven trenches, nine of which had archaeological features interpreted as being of agricultural origin. Fourteen furrows and a ditch were dispersed among the trenches. These features contained roof tile fragments of late medieval to post-medieval date and some Roman and early medieval pottery which is considered to be residual. The ditch is interpreted as the boundary ditch of an enclosed field and the layer was located within what would have been the enclosed field. A large, irregular pit within the enclosed field is undated. A modern ditch containing a large fragment of china represents a shortening of the north end of the enclosed field, or it may be a later internal division/drainage feature. The mixed finds assemblage most likely dates from the late medieval to post-medieval periods. The presence of earlier artefacts also indicates that there was Roman and early medieval settlement activity in the vicinity. The features present suggest prolonged agricultural activity, close to settlement but beyond its limits. |
