Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during restoration work on a pair of ponds adjacent to the Lime Avenue, to the south of Lyme Hall. The ponds were first recorded as 'ancient' in 1810, which might imply an early post-medieval origin. They were restored by an MSC team during the 1980s, but silting and vegetation growth necessitated new desilting and landscaping work. The watching brief revealed evidence for how the site had developed, and it is possible that they were first intended as fishponds within the post-medieval deer park. |
