Archaeological watching brief observing foundation trench digging for a one storey extension. No archaeological deposits identified

This report presents the results of an archaeological watching brief conducted for a development at 16-18 The Front, Middleton One Row, Darlington. The works comprised the monitoring of two foundation trenches to the rear of the property.

This report presents the results of building recording and an archaeological watching brief conducted for a development at 26-27 North Bailey, Durham City. The works comprised recording a boundary wall, and a watching brief during groundworks for a new plant room with associated services. The boundary wall between 26 and 27 North Bailey was recorded before it was dismantled. The watching brief recorded the remains of several stone and brick walls. Most of these walls align with structures on historic Ordnance Survey maps, and relate to post-medieval property boundaries, and out-buildings. It is possible that stone foundations for some of these walls reflect earlier structures on the site. A small assemblage comprising a pot sherd, glass and animal bones dating from the medieval period onwards was recovered from the archaeological deposits. These deposits probably accumulated over time and are significantly disturbed.

This report presents the results of geophysical surveys conducted in advance of proposed development of a motorway service area on land to the northeast of Junction 46 on the A1(M) at Wetherby.

The project is a programme of geophysical survey of land adjacent to the A1(T) between Dishforth and Barton in North Yorkshire, as part of a larger Stage 3 evaluation in advance of proposed motorway up-grade. Geomagnetic surveys were conducted over 84 areas and electrical resistance surveys were conducted over two areas. Probable archaeological remains were detected in 71 of these areas.

Six geomagnetic surveys were conducted to the north and south of Healam Beck on the eastern side of the A1(T). The surveys comprised the fifth programme of survey on land adjacent the A1(T) between Dishforth and Barton. An additional 132 surveys (232ha) were undertaken during earlier programmes between 2005 and 2007. The 6 surveys in this programme of work detected two possible soil filled features, a pit and several probable ditch features, which could possibly be parts of enclosures or small ring-ditches. Features detected east of Healam Bridge Roman fort and vicus could be associated with the vicus or may belong to an earlier or later phase of activity. Traces of former ridge and furrow cultivation were also detected.
