Watching brief during construction of a new barn and associated access road and yard

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the demolition and subsequent groundworks associated with redevelopment of the site of the former shops adjoining Ashmead House at H5, Barton Hill, Bristol. Initially work comprised demolition of the existing shops and removal of ring-beams and slab below them. The excavation of standard strip foundation trenches and drainage channels were then monitored. The watching brief uncovered a number of post-medieval structures relating to the development of the Barton Hill area in the 19th-century. The remains Beaufort Road were identified. This was one of a number of 19th-century roads that ran through the site area that were levelled in the 1960's.The road may have began as a trackway dating back to at least the early 18th-century. A number of mid - late 19th-century buildings were also found. They comprised of stone cellar walls, foundations and brick walls. A brick vaulted arch cellar roof was also discovered. These structures are indicative of the development of the Barton Hill area as a whole. Around this time the Floating Harbour, Feeder Canal and perhaps especially the cotton factory just to the south of the site meant the Barton Hill area was becoming more urbanised and industrial. By the late 19th-century the site area had become dense with terraced housing and commercial buildings. The roads and buildings uncovered during the watching brief were demolished as part of the regeneration of the site in the 1960's.

Selected building recording at the former Magistrates Court in Bridewell Street, central Bristol, prior to works to remove timber affected by dry and wet rot. The building was erected as a police court in the later 19th century and extended later. For a time in the post-war period it was used as a Crown Court, but was replaced by new facilities in the mid-1990s.
