Series: Witham Archaeology unpublished report series

A single trial trench 15m long by 1.6m wide was excavated on the proposed site of a new house in gardens west of 168 Norwood Road, March. The site lay in close proximity to previous finds of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman date. At 168 Norwood Road, geological deposits were reached at shallow depth. There was no evidence of significant archaeological remains.

An archaeological excavation was undertaken on land immediately west of Stamford Lane. The site lies in close proximity to a ring ditch identified by aerial photography and adjacent to the line of a Roman road followed by Stamford Lane. Saxon and medieval deposits have been excavated in the village. Prior evaluation of the site in 2011 had indicated extensive disturbance caused by 18th or 19th century gravel extraction but a ditch was located, containing one sherd of Roman pot. The excavation confirmed that considerable disturbance has resulted from the gravel pits. A ditch (probably a continuation of the one identified in the evaluation was also located, together a number of generally undated pits and postholes.

A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Witham Archaeology during groundworks relating to the construction of extensions to 27 Station Road, Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire. The work was commissioned by Mr. Charles Heard to meet the requirements of a condition attached to planning permission granted by the South Kesteven District Council. The Scheduled site of a possible 11th century moat and bailey castle survives in the form of earthworks approximately 240m to the north-west of the Site. References suggest that the stone-built elements of the castle were dismantled during the mid 16th century. The proposed area of development comprises a late post medieval Inn (now converted into a dwelling) and the rear garden. The programme of monitoring and recording revealed late post medieval and modern activity associated with the construction of the inn and later extensions respectively. Possible evidence of a medieval subsoil was also recorded.

An archaeological evaluation recorded the presence of an area of low lying boggy ground. Dumping of clay in the Late medieval/early post medieval periods may represent an episode of land reclamation. A ditch dating to the early post-medieval period may represent an attempt to drain the land. Infill of soils in the early post medieval period raised the ground surface.

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of an extension to the existing bungalow at 56 Main Road, Toynton All Saints. Previous archaeological in the vicinity indicated a potential for remains associated with medieval and post-medieval pottery production. A linear feature (interpreted as a ditch) containing pottery similar to Toynton-type ware found in mid 13th to mid 14th century deposits in Boston, was recorded in one of the foundation trenches. A large assemblage of unstratified pottery dated mainly as late 13th to 15th century, but including mid 15th to 16th century material, was recovered from the site.

This report presents the results of research carried out by Witham Archaeology in relation to the redevelopment of Abbey Estate, Thetford. The report, commissioned Flagship Housing, will inform the local planning authority in deciding the scope of for further archaeological works prior to the determination of a planning application. The area of the proposed development, covering approximately 36 hectares, is located at the north-western edge of Thetford. Most of the area of the Site is occupied by a housing estate, built from mid 20th century. Spot finds have been made within Abbey Estate dating to the Prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods, Areas of significant archaeological remains have been identified in the nearby area, including Abbey Heath to the west of the Site, where over 6000 prehistoric flint implements were found and the scheduled sites of the medieval Cluniac Priory to the east, the remains of the Roman settlement and Saxon town. This investigation identified a high potential for archaeology remains to be present on the Site.

This report presents the results of a programme of Historic Building Recording undertaken by Witham Archaeology at the Old Rectory, Main Street, Glooston, Leicestershire. The project was commissioned by Ross Thain Architects on behalf of their client, Mr John Greaney, in response to a condition of full planning permission imposed by Harborough District Council. The proposed development comprises the conversion and extension of a single storey outbuilding into a study, store and cloakroom. The First Edition of the 1:25000 Ordnance Survey County map published in 1886 shows a structure of the same size and shape occupying the position of the surveyed building, located on the western boundary to the northwest of the Old Rectory and to the west of the St John the Baptist church, a Grade II listed building. The ancillary building was probably a mid-Victorian coach house and stable serving the vicarage. A pigsty was probably located on the northern side of the building, while an area which probably housed a copper may have been used to prepare feed for the animals. It is possible that the latter was also used as a tack/harness room. The setting for the pigsty is somewhat unusual, being located in a prominent position in front of the house, although the original setting may have provided more screening to separate the ancillary building from the house. A hayloft probably extended over the stable and coach house, and this appears to have been loaded from the door in the south gable.

Following geophysical of approximately 2.5 hectares of a site located to the north of Willingham Road, Market Rasen, a total of 16 trenches were excavated. Fifteen of the trenches measured 30m x 1.6m and one 5m x 1m. . The project was commissioned by Skylark Homes in order to provide information on the archaeological impact of proposed development at the site in support of a planning application to be submitted to the Local Planning Authority. Although the site lies close to a previously excavated site containing evidence domestic and industrial activity dating to the Middle Iron Age, only modern features were recorded within the evaluation. The majority of features probably relate to the early 20th century brick extraction site just to the west of the site.

A single trench 15m long was excavated at Bridge House, Orby Road, Burgh-le-Marsh, Lincolnshire, on the site of a proposed single dwelling development. Romano-British remains had been found 200m north of Bridge house during construction of the bypass around Burgh-le-Marsh. No similar evidence was found at Bridge House, the sequence comprising layers of silt overlain by modern rubble and the makeup for a drive.
