IntroductionACE Archaeology Club was formed in 1997, as a direct result of the production of the Winkleigh Community Book, the year before. Those of us, who were involved in researching the History and Archaeology for the book, soon discovered that not a lot of work had been done in this part of Devon. So ACE was formed and with a grant from the Winkleigh book committee, for equipment, we were able to get to work straight away.
ACE meets eJudi Clarke & post hole 29 8 04very first Saturday of the month, where we meet will depend upon the activity, as we have no headquarters as such. As well as our regular meetings, there are various ongoing projects to get involved with. There is a quarterly newsletter for members with articles, reports, updates and a diary of meetings and events.
As well as the serious archaeology we have also delved into the experimental side; making and firing pottery, flint knapping, ancient black smithing, iron smelting, food and drink and building a roundhouse or two. Experimental archaeology not only helps us to appreciate the artefacts that we dig up, but also demonstrates just how skilful people were long ago.
