I subsequently took up employment as a draughtsman and wasintroduced to the profession of Chartered Building Surveyor. Upon gaining my Chartered status Ibecame a building surveyor for Nottinghamshire County Council. I moved to Cumbria in 1983 to take upa new position as Principal Building Surveyor with Cumbria County Council acting as project manager on numerous building contracts for the maintenance and alteration of buildings and undertookmany building surveys. During this thirty year period I worked on traditional and historic buildingswhich stimulated my interest in historic buildings and led me to gain a MSc in ArchitecturalConservation from the University of Central Lancashire and become a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. In 2010 I retired from full-time employment and RICS membership in order to concentrate on thestablishment of a heritage consultancy. JB Heritage Consultancy was established in 2010 and isadministered by myself as sole principal with clerical assistance from my wife, Margaret.
