Archaeological recording in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, 2007-8
J E Schofield
Two small projects reported together and with the same LAARC sitecode (PKB07): (a) a photographic survey of ledgers and other details to be affected by the refurbishment of the bay at the extreme E end of the S aisle of the crypt to be the Knights Bachelor Chapel (photos by A Chopping of MoLAS); (b) recording of a casket and coffin slightly disturbed (though not removed) by the moving of the ledger stone above them, in the S part of the central crypt, to enable the building of an access ramp (part of the disabled access provision) which crossed the site of the ledger.

Excavations in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, 1996-7 (SPU96)
J E Schofield
In 1996-7 archaeological excavation took place ahead of refurbishments in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral below the nave and west end. Little of the medieval building or its ancillaries were found. A tunnel on the E side of the SW tower, at crypt level, produced 77 moulded stones from the medieval building of which at least 45 came from the portico added to the W end by Inigo Jones in 1635-42. In the Wmost bay of the nave crypt details of the Wren construction site were found, including temporary drains and probably a mortar-mixing area. A separate trench for a drain in a passage E of the N transept found Roman pits, burials dated by C14 to the 9th century and architectural fragments probably from the Jones-period door on the N side of the nave.

St Paul's Cathedral: archaeological recording of installation of new lift and external cleaning, 2006-11
J E Schofield
Recording during refurbishment and external cleaning at St Paul's included recording of a new passage at crypt level for a new stage of the lift within the core of the main circular stair at the junction of the nave and south transept, being amended for better disabled use; and photography of many details of carved work, by Grinling Gibbons and others, on the outside of the cathedral. This photography by Andy Chopping of MoLA included shots of carvings before and after cleaning.

J E Schofield
