Papers by various authors celebrate the 200th anniversary of the originator of the 'Three Age System', first published in 1836, which not only contained the famous Stone Age/Bronze Age/Iron Age division but set the paradigm for archaeological work for the next century. Thomsen's work contains three principles: typological thinking, the use of ethnographic analogies, and a sense of evolutionary development. He worked for preservation of field monuments, employed craftsmen to restore museum objects, was a noted numismatist, organized a forty-four room ethnographic collection, and set up the Royal Arsenal Museum.
