These site images together with the associated publication, present the results of archaeological recording work carried out during alterations to The College, 15-16 Market Place, Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The buildings are listed at Grade II and form part of the Bishop Auckland Conservation Area. The objective of the project was to record any historically or archaeologically significant features revealed by the works.

The works were commissioned by The Auckland Project and conducted byArchaeological Services Durham University. The work was undertaken to reinstate an historic gateway in the south range of the former quadrangle of the College, on the west side of the Castle. Archaeological monitoring was carried out during work to re-open the original south gate of the College, which ran through the range between nos. 15 and 16. This required the removal of ground- and first-floor rooms and two two-storey sections of outer wall. The building work also entailed plaster stripping across both faces of the houses and substantial re-fitting of their interiors.

The buildings were visited on eight occasions between 17th February 2019 and 23rdMarch 2020. Later work was hampered by precautions related to the coronavirus pandemic, with the result that the full exposure of the south face was not seen. The report was prepared for September 2020.
