On the 6th and 7th of July 2017 Oxford Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation comprising three trenches on land forming a proposed housing development at Naldertown, Wantage, Oxfordshire (NGR: SU 39213 88136).
Archaeological features were present within all three trenches. Numerous ditches revealed during the investigation are likely to represent the remains of Roman enclosure and field systems. Stone roof tiles, ceramic building material, nails and large limestone fragments suggest that there may have been a structure or structures in the vicinity of the site. A Victorian soakaway or well was also present and can be associated with a structure shown on the historic maps.
The eastern boundary of the site is formed by Ham Road, which follows the root of the former Roman road. The results of the evaluation may be indicative of a roadside settlement.
