Introduction
Phase Two of HS2 is split into two sections.
The Phase 2a route extends north-west from Lichfield to Crewe across the landscape of the north-west Midlands, crossing the country’s east-west watershed as it does so. The nature of its design means that it tends to avoid topographic extremes and heavily built up areas, and as a consequence, its route through Staffordshire into southern Cheshire is almost entirely rural in character.
An Environmental Statement was prepared in support of the passage of the hybrid Bill through Parliament; that includes the environmental impact assessment of the Proposed Scheme on the historic environment.
Royal Assent was granted in 2021: High Speed Rail (West Midlands - Crewe) Act.
The historic environment programme commenced in full in 2020, although geophysical survey (beyond that included in the Environmental Statement) was undertaken from 2018.
The programme will continue in the field until approximately 2027. Post excavation works will continue until 2029.
The west leg of Phase 2B will connect to the high speed lines at Crewe and run through a largely rural environment to Manchester.
The hybrid Bill for this section will be deposited before Parliament in later 2021/early 2022. This will be accompanied by an Environmental Statement that includes the environmental impact assessment of the Proposed Scheme on the historic environment.
The historic environment programme is being developed and the substantive fieldwork element will commence following the grant of Royal Assent.
