Title:
Continuity and Change in the Mid Chelmer Valley, Archaeology Excavations at Old Hall and Generals Farm Boreham 2007.
Filename: 1732_BOOH06_EAH_REPORT.pdf (3 MB) Description: Archaeological investigation preceded the construction of an agricultural reservoir and flood plain extension at Old Hall and Generals Farm, Boreham, with preliminary trial trenching leading to the excavation of three sites within the overall scheme area. Located on the North side of the Chelmer Valley, these investigations give insight into its past land use of its slope and valley floor adjacent to the river and navigation. The exploitation, development and changing significance of this landscape are demonstrated from the Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic onwards, as evidenced by a palaeosol and tree throws containing worked flint, a Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age henge, Bronze Age and Iron Age Barrows, Late Iron Age and Roman field systems, a Saxon waterfront structure and a medieval farmstead. The presence of a coal yard and wharf alongside the river Chelmer marks the continued evolution of the site into the post medieval period. |

Title:
Old Hall Reservoir Boreham Essex Archaeological Excavation.
Filename: 1732_BOOH06reportplus_Appendix.pdf (5 MB) Description: The site contains Neolithic henges, Bronze age ring ditches, Iron age broaches and Medieval remains. This investigation has revealed that the prehistoric occupation of this part of the Chelmer Valley was early in origin, extensive, multi-faceted and complex in its development – demonstrating concurrent elements or strands of continuity and change over thousands of years. These remains document the first transitory occupation and exploitation of the landscape, the beginnings of its permanent settlement and farming, and the subsequent development of the rural landscape through to the modern day. This work has also highlighted the difficulty in identifying remains due to the adverse soil conditions and masking of early deposits by alluvium that are encountered in valley floor locations, and serves to emphasise the high archaeological potential of the Chelmer Valley in general. |

Archaeology South East
: Archaeology South East.
Filename: 1568BOOH06wsi.pdf (143 kB) Description: A number of cropmarks, indicative of the presence of below-ground archaeological remains, are known within the proposed development area and within the surrounding vicinity. The archaeological and historical significance of this site has previously been investigated by means of a desk-based assessment (Heppell 2004). In summary, the area of investigation includes cropmarks of two likely prehistoric ring-ditches (remains of burial mounds) and fragmentary remains of two further examples, a trackway of unknown date and other linear ditch-like features. Some of the linear ditches correlate with field boundaries marked on the 1st edition OS mapping, that have subsequently been in-filled. A late 18th century coal wharf is known to have once existed in the south-west corner of the proposed development area. |
