Introduction

Mortar floor under context 2003
Mortar floor under context 2003

This collection comprises site images and a photo catalogue from a scheme of archaeological excavation and monitoring conducted in conjunction with renovation works within the former Guisborough Town Hall, Westgate, Guisborough, Redcar and Cleveland. Work was undertaken between November 2020 and August 2021 by Northern Archaeological Associates.

Three trenches were excavated internally by hand within the interior of the building, five additional trial pits were dug by the contractor under archaeological supervision.

Well-preserved urban stratigraphy dating from the medieval through to the post-medieval periods was uncovered across the site. Key discoveries included the remains of the earlier (16th-17thC.) Tolbooth which stood on the site, remains of a large sandstone building and evidence of a stone-built extension added to the rear of the Tolbooth. Finds included clay pipes, glass, medieval and post-medieval pottery, animal bone showing butchery marks, fish bone and molluscs, ceramic building material, nails and metal fittings. Of note were a medieval silver halfpenny of Robert II of Scotland (r.1371-1390) and a George III (r.1760-1820) half penny.
