COPA were commissioned by Fusion to undertake an archaeological evaluation at HS2 2017 Construction Land Requirement CR01065 Halse Copse South, Northamptonshire. The project plan established the scope, aims, contribution to the Generic Written Scheme of Investigation: Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (GWSI: HERDS) objectives, techniques, deliverable and reporting mechanism for the investigation. The fieldwork was undertaken between 3rd and 4th January 2018.The trial trenching addresses two areas of land located to the north of Halse and south-east of Greatworth, Northamptonshire (NGR 456893 242070). In total the Site covers an area of c.1.32ha in two arable fields and is located south-east of a covered reservoir. The Site is required for habitat creation, including the creation of mitigation ponds approximately 1.50m deep. The fieldwork comprised five 30m trenches (Tr1-Tr5) positioned in lieu of geophysical survey to determine a baseline for the archaeological potential.
Based on the negative results of the evaluation, the Site is considered to have a very low archaeological potential.
