This collection comprises images, spreadsheets, reports, vector graphics, and scanned site records and drawings from a trial trench evaluation by Archaeological Research Services at Ladbroke, Warwickshire.
The evaluation forms part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project, which will involve the construction of a new railway approximately 230km (143 miles) in length between London and the West Midlands. Powers for the construction, operation and maintenance of Phase One are conferred by the High-Speed Rail (London - West Midlands) Act 2017.
The archaeological works were undertaken during March and May 2020. 23 trenches were excavated across a single land parcel measuring 7.77 ha.
The aims of the work were to confirm the presence/ absence, extent and depth of any surviving archaeological remains within the site and to determine the nature, date, condition, state of preservation, complexity and significance of any archaeological remains. Specific objectives of the project were to identify settlement location and developing models for settlement patterns for the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
Of the 23 trenches excavated, 14 revealed the presence of archaeology that included ditch, pit, and posthole features. The features produced Late Iron-Age- Romano-British ceramics up to the 2nd century AD, together with some possible 3rd century AD ceramics from the unstratified topsoil in Field F28_0053.
The evaluation trenching confirmed the presence of well‐preserved Late Iron Age to Romano‐British multi‐phase rural settlement and farming complex.
This is a regionally significant archaeological site with unusually well‐preserved deposits that provide an opportunity to investigate and understand a coherent multi‐phase Late Iron Age‐ Romano‐British transition settlement. It is located in an area where few such sites have been excavated and where even fewer have well‐preserved organic remains. There is also the potential for the survival of earlier features in amongst the multi‐phase farming complex.
This archive forms part of the archaeological investigative work undertaken ahead of the construction of High Speed 2. All of the files contained within this archive are suitable for reuse as they are in standard, easy accessible formats, in line with the FAIR Principles. The archive may be looked at in conjunction with other HS2 archives to further add depth and context to the works. All specialist reporting was taken to assessment level, there is potential for further analysis, should it be deemed necessary.
