This collection comprises reports, images, plans and site records from historic building recording carried out by MOLA Headland Infrastructure at the Insull Wing of the National Temperance Hospital, Camden, Greater London in December 2017. A report detailing the works undertaken by MOLA following the discovery of two time capsules during the demolition of the former National Temperance Hospital is also included.
A programme of Historic Building recording was undertaken at the Insull Wing of the National Temperance Hospital ahead of its demolition, following the recording and demolition of the rest of the structure (East and Central wings, the Turret Block, West and North-West Wings).
The building recording comprised a Level 2 survey, as defined in Understanding Historic Buildings: A guide to good recording practice (Historic England, 2016). This provides a sufficient level of recording to both assess the character and use, and any changes thereof, of the building over its lifetime, including a photographic record of the building and its immediate setting. It also enables the identification of any significant architecturally non-standardised features. The Building Recording was undertaken with specific guidance produced by HS2, namely the Technical Standard Specification for historic environment investigations (HS2-HS2-EV-STD-000-000035) and the Generic Written Scheme of Investigation: Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (GWSI: HERDS) (HS2-HS2-EV-STR-000- 000015).
According to the Project Plan (1EW02-CSJ-EV-PLN-S003-000006) produced for the Insull Wing the aims of the project include research of archival sources relating to the design, construction, use and alteration of the building. They also include recording of the extent and character of the Insull Wing and assessing the extent and completeness of building remains. Moreover, the project aims to suggest provisions to be made during demolition, where applicable, for the salvage of material of architectural or historic significance which has the potential for reuse and compile a lasting record of the building and its setting.
This archive provides a comprehensive descriptive, analytical and visual record of the Insull Wing of the National Temperance Hospital. The archive can provide information for any future research regarding the asset as part of the enabling works of HS2.
This archive can be used independently and/or in in conjunction with the rest of HS2 datasets in order to inform the wider historic building records generated through this project. This can also function as a guide to digital archiving for future infrastructure projects benefiting both the commercial sector and the research community.
