This collection comprises images, GIS, spreadsheets, and an interim report from archaeological monitoring conducted by INFRA Archaeology on land at North Portal, near Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. The monitoring took place from November 2019 to January 2020 and focused on ground-breaking works associated with the construction of a compound, haulage road and pylon bases for the National Grid and Balfour Beatty works to realign a large overhead power cable.
The monitoring forms part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project, which will involve the construction of a new railway approximately 230km (143 miles) in length between London and the West Midlands. Powers for the construction, operation and maintenance of Phase One are conferred by the High-Speed Rail (London - West Midlands) Act 2017.
The aim of the Archaeological Monitoring was to confirm the presence/absence and potential extent of any surviving archaeological remains within the stripped overburden of Site. This was to ensure the enabling works did not impact on the archaeological resource.
The works only exposed the upper surface or interface with the subsoil in places and no archaeological features were noted cutting through the topsoil or subsoil where it was exposed. The finds recovered within the topsoil were dated similarly to other finds recovered from the evaluation and mitigation of North Portal and are not significant. The archive presented here would be beneficial to any further work as it provides examples of the area's depth of archaeological horizon.
