Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Old Oak Common Railway Carriage Sheds.
Old Oak Common Railway Carriage Sheds.

This collection comprises images, site records, documents, reports, spreadsheets, CAD files and a laser scan from a building survey carried out by MOLA Headland Infrastructure (MHI) and MOLA Northampton at the Old Oak Common Carriage Sheds, Hammersmith and Fulham during October and November 2019.

Project Summary

A Historic Building Recording Programme was undertaken by the MHI team at the Old Oak Common Carriage Sheds. A built Heritage recording exercise was required to assess and record the character, extent and significance of the Old Oak Common carriage sheds in advance of proposed construction works for the new (HS2) Old Oak Common Station.

The aims of the historic building recording exercise were to investigate and record the building, with particular consideration of the use and character of the shed as an example of railway infrastructure, and of any elements of particular architectural or historic significance, such as those afforded particular attention or elaborate in design. The building recording programme also included documenting the historical background of the carriage sheds, assessing the extent and completeness of building remains, and compiling a lasting record of the building(s) and their setting, including an assessment of the impact of the railway on its immediate townscape.

The building recording comprised a Level 3 survey. This provides a sufficient level of recording to both assess the character and use, and any changes thereof, of the building over its lifetime, including a photographic record of the building and its immediate setting. It also enables the identification of any significant architecturally non-standardised features. Non-intrusive investigations were carried out including the investigation and recording of the fabric of the structures and their structural elements. The survey consisted of a comprehensive photographic record of the buildings, including detailed and general shots of the interior and exterior fabric of the buildings. In addition, CAD drawings of the both the interior and exterior of the buildings were produced using available laser scan data and measured survey notes collected by the attending buildings archaeologists.

Re-Use Value Statement

This archive provides a comprehensive descriptive, analytical and visual record of the Oal Oak Common Rail Depot and the Associated Railway Turntable. The archive can provide information for any future research regarding the asset as part of the enabling works of HS2.

This archive can be used independently and/or in in conjunction with the rest of HS2 datasets in order to inform the wider historic building records generated through this project. This can also function as a guide to digital archiving for future infrastructure projects benefiting both the commercial sector and the research community.
