Introduction

Data from a Trial Trenching at Halse Copse East, Greatworth, Northamptonshire, 2018-2021 (HS2 Phase One)

This collection includes images, site records and a spreadsheet from a trial trench evaluation carried out by COPA (Cotswold Oxford Pre-Construct Archaeology) at Halse Copse East, Greatworth, Northamptonshire during March 2018.

Project Summary

The trial trench evaluation was required to determine, as far as reasonably possible, the nature of the archaeological resource within the Site. The Site is located in an area of virtually unknown archaeological potential due to the absence of previous archaeological work. Due to modern contamination of the soil, geophysical survey of the Site could not be successfully undertaken.

If present, archaeological remains might date to the medieval period, related to a former park boundary and/or agricultural activity. Hints of Iron Age and/or Roman activity in the vicinity suggests some potent ial for remains relating to these periods. Remains from other periods might be discovered. Trial trenching will provide the most appropriate single methodology to confirm the presence/absence and significance of archaeological remains from this broad range of periods.

The objective of the investigation is to identify the extent and character of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site and to inform an archaeological resource assessment of its knowledge value and ability to contribute to Specific Objectives. The outcomes of the investigation will be used to inform the requirement and strategy of further archaeological investigation. Where present the investigation will define the character, extent, quality, preservation and significance of the archaeology in order to determine its potential to contribute to Specific Objectives set out in the GWSI: HERDS.

The aims of the trial trenching were to:

  • confirm the presence/absence, extent and depth of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site;
  • determine the nature, date, condition, state of preservat ion, complexity and significance of any archaeological remains;
  • determine if any remains of Greatworth hunt ing park boundary survives within Halse Copse South in the form of ditches, bank or pale line;
  • determine the likely range, quality and quantity of artefactual and environmental evidence present;
  • suggest measures, if appropriate and feasible, for further archaeological investigation to mitigate identified significant impacts

Re-Use Value Statement

The location, extent, survival and significance of any heritage assets of archaeological interest on this site have been captured in this dataset. This can inform future research into the archaeology and practices within the site and surrounding landscape, but also for the county as a whole.
