This collection comprises of images, spreadsheets and site records from a trial trench at Greatworth Hall, Northamptonshire, 2019-2020.
The outcome of the geophysical survey has been largely confirmed by trial trenching (C252-ETM-EV-REP-020-000264_P01). The features on the northern and north-eastern part of site form a possible localised, enclosed, Iron Age farmstead, defined by a D-shaped enclosure and ancillary features. The features to south proved to be inconclusive. The trial trenching works confirmed ridge and furrow cultivation in Trenches 36, 44, 47-49, 55, 59, 69 and 72. The trial trenching works also confirmed the presence of post-medieval quarrying in trenches 44 and 45 only, which suggests quarrying was more localised than initially supposed by geophysical survey. A single well was identified in Trench 17. No archaeological features were recorded in Trenches 1-16, 18, 19, 22-27, 30-33, 35, 37, 40, 42, 43, 46-49, 51-53, 57-59, 61, 62, 64, 65, 69, 70 and 72-74.
The Greatworth Hall archive can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value.
The site has value on its own as it identified post-medieval quarrying and an Iron Age farmstead which may be worth further study. The evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain.
