This collection comprises of images, reports, site record and spreadsheet data from an archaeological trial trench evaluation at Stone House and Chipping Warden Airfield, Northamptonshire, between the 26th May 2020 and the 20th July 2020.
In total 221 trenches were excavated which encompassed three parcels of land (C32044, C30245 and C32046) measuring 32.9ha in total. This investigation followed a geophysical survey, which identified a possible settlement centralized in the northeast corner of the Site with related activity extending westwards. Evidence of medieval Ridge and Furrow cultivation was also identified. The trail trenching confirmed the geophysical survey and identified a series of inter-cutting linear ditches and pot and pit features across the north of the site. Examination of both environmental remains and the artefactual indicate that these features represent a modest Late Iron Age to Romano-British agricultural settlement.
The archaeological features and the artefactual evidence uncovered and recorded in the digital archive were used to inform a further programmes of Archaeological Recording, (IC20STOAR) to fully characterise the potential settlement. The digital archive for Chipping Warden may also prove valuable for any future developments in the area.
