Introduction
This collection comprises image, text and spreadsheet data from Trial Trenching Work at Edgcote Battlefield, Northamptonshire. The work was undertaken by Connect Archaeology between 2019 and 2021.
Project Summary
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out at Edgcote Battlefield, Northamptonshire by Connect archaeology for Fusion-JV on behalf of HS2 ltd. The evaluation took place between November and December 2019 on lands designated as C31026-C31028 and C31031-C31032 located across parts of four arable fields between Edgecote and Culworth, Northamptonshire. The evaluation followed a geophysical survey which had identified clusters of linear, rectangular, and discrete anomalies in the North and South of the site as well as evidence of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. The results of the geophysical survey were generally confirmed by the trial trench evaluation. The anomalies represented features associated with two Romano-British settlements, pottery returned from the site was dated to the 2nd-3rd Centuries AD. Human remains were also returned from the southern area of the site (TR 54) two bones likely from a single individual, were identified in a disturbed grave cut dating to the Roman Period. Overall the site appears to represent two contemporary Romano-British agricultural settlements.
Re-Use Value Statement
The Edgcote archive can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value.
The site has value on it’s own as it identified two Romano-Britch agricultural settlements which may be worth further study. The evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain.
