Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

This collection comprises text, images, spreadsheets and site records from an archaeological evaluation undertaken at Lower Thorpe Farm by Connect Archaeology for Fusion-JV, on behalf of High Speed Two Limited, between 11th June 2020 and 1st July 2020. This forms part of the enabling works for HS2 Ltd rail link Phase One.

Project Summary

Geophysical and remote-sensing surveys had identified anomalies which were thought to represent post-medieval features, possibly quarrying activity. The works were undertaken to investigate these anomalies and to sample those areas deemed blank by the geophysical and remote-sensing surveys.

The outcome of the geophysical and remote-sensing surveys were not supported by the archaeological evaluation. A singular pit was evaluated in Trench 5. The outcome of the geophysical and remote-sensing surveys were largely confirmed by archaeological evaluation. The potential post-medieval quarrying identified was confirmed in Trenches 20 and 23.

Re-Use Value Statement

The Lower Thorpe evaluations archive can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value.

The site has value on its own as it identified a pit of unknown date and post-medieval quarrying. The evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain.
