This collection comprises images from historic building recording of four agricultural buildings, one of which being the chalk barn in Elsham, Lincolnshire. This work was undertaken by Archaeological Research Services Ltd November 2019 to Jan 2020.

The historic building recording was undertaken as a condition of both the planning permission and Listed Building Consent prior to the conversion of the buildings into residential properties.

Elsham Chalk Barn is situated in Elsham Top Farm, and is a large scale, regular courtyard plan farmstead comprising an L-shaped barn layout with a stable block to the west and outbuildings to the south.

The farmstead has remained relatively unchanged since its construction in the early 19th century. There has been a number of additions in the courtyard evident in historic maps, showing subdivisions of the courtyard space. Although little to no change occurred at Elsham Top Farm externally, internally the spaces of the barns reflect changing farming practices and the adoption of mechanised methods of grain production, mainly in the last century. It is also likely that the two primary materials used to construct these buildings, chalk ashlar and red brick, reflect two distinct phases in the development of the site.
