Introduction

Shot of Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Auditorium
Shot of Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Auditorium

This collection comprises images and a report from Historic Building Recording of the former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, West Street, Swadlincote. This Level 2 descriptive and photographic building record was undertaken by Mel Morris Conservation during February 2022.

The survey was focused on the interior of the chapel which was due for removal as part of a conversion scheme to apartments, although images of the exterior are also included. The images include shots of interior features such as the auditorium, rostrum, pews, stained glass and organ.

The present building dates largely from 1863, when it was rebuilt to accommodate 800 seated people. There are two areas of brickwork on the north and north-west elevations which may relate to the former building on the site. The 1863 building is evident on the 1883 OS map.
