Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Shot of the modern well during excavation
Shot of the modern well during excavation

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an excavation at 7 Box Lane, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. This strip, map and record excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in August 2021.

A small number of prehistoric worked flint flakes were recovered from a small pit and a clayey deposit. These features are presumably associated with similar limited prehistoric remains recorded during a previous trial trench evaluation of the site.

Two further pits contained small amounts of Roman pottery and tile, and further Roman artefacts were residual/ redeposited in later features. It is likely that these features/ artefacts represent limited outlying activity associated with Boxmoor Roman Villa, which lay to the immediate south of the development site.

A small number of further pits and a ditch were late post-medieval/ modern in date.
