Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

This collection comprises text, images, spreadsheets and site records from a trial trench evaluation carried out by L - P : Archaeology between June and September 2018 at Stoke Mandeville Bypass, Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire.

Project Summary

The trial trenching is required to determine, as far as reasonably possible, the nature of the archaeological resource within the Site.

If present, archaeological remains are likely to be associated with the late prehistoric/Roman settlement identified within Area 1 by the geophysical survey. The prehistoric/Roman archaeological remains on the Site could include roads, ditches, enclosures and post-holes relating to the possible settlement and field systems.

The medieval remains which may be found on the Site could relate to earthwork platforms for buildings, post-holes and hearths relating to timber buildings, water management streams and fish ponds, along with evidence of agricultural activity. Additionally, remains from other periods may also be present.

Trial trench evaluation provides the most appropriate single methodology to confirm the presence/absence and significance of archaeological remains from this broad range of periods.

The objective of the investigation is to identify the extent and character of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site and to inform an archaeological resource assessment of its knowledge value and ability to contribute to Specific Objectives. The outcomes of the investigation will be used to inform the requirement and strategy of further archaeological investigation. Where present the investigation will define the character, extent, quality, preservation and significance of the archaeology in order to determine its potential to contribute to Specific Objectives set out in the GWSI: HERDS.

The aims of the trial trenching are to:

  • To confirm the presence/absence, extent and depth of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site; to determine the nature, date, condition, state of preservation, complexity and significance of any archaeological remains;
  • To determine the likely range, quality and quantity of artefactual and environmental evidence present; suggest measures, if appropriate and feasible, for further archaeological investigation to mitigate identified significant impacts; and contribute to the delivery of GWSI: HERDS Specific Objectives.

Re-Use Value Statement

The datasets created in this project were used to prepare future investigation at St Mary’s Church. The final datasets will be integrated into those that will be produced during the new mitigation works.
