Introduction

Overview of the excavation site
Overview of the excavation site

This collection comprises image and text data from Archaeological Recording Work at Chipping Warden Relief Road, Northamptonshire. The work was undertaken between 2019-2022 by L-P: Archaeology. The content of the collection includes the site records produced during the mitigation works (context sheets, registers and archaeological drawings) and archaeological photos. The site archive, comprising written, drawn, and digital records, along with finds and environmental materials, will be deposited with a museum archive in accordance with HS2 policy.

Project Summary

The programme of archaeological recording was required to record any archaeological remains identified within the vicinity of the possible ploughed-out barrow comprising a double ditched oval feature with a possible collapsed embankment. This was undated but may be Bronze Age.

The aim of the archaeological recording was:

  • To ensure the adequate recording of any archaeological remains revealed during the soil stripping within the vicinity of the possible ploughed-out barrow.
  • To identify and understand as far as possible the nature, depth, date, character, and relationship of each of the features identified.
  • Contribute to the delivery of Generic Written Scheme of Investigation (GWSI): Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (HERDS) Specific Objectives.

Re-Use Value Statement

The datasets created will be re-used by HS2 in the event of further mitigation works.
