This collection comprises image, report, site record and spreadsheet data from archaeological trial trench evaluation work that took place at Southam, Warwickshire. The work was undertaken by Connect Archaeology between 2020 and 2021.
An archaeological trial trench evaluation took place between July and November 2020 and between 22nd and 29th of April 2021. The trial trench evaluation was undertaken on four parcels of land and encompasses 34.1 hectares in total. This investigation followed a geophysical survey, which identified a number of anomalies that were interpreted as an area of potential late prehistoric to Roman settlement located centrally within the site. Four areas of archaeological interest were identified dating between the Iron Age and Roman periods. An alignment of pits dating from the Bronze Age to Iron Age were identified in the centre of the site and a settlement with an associated cremation burial dating to the Iron Age was identified to the west of the site. A dense area of Roman activity was identified in the south of the site which returned a range of artefacts representing a typical rural settlement.
The archaeological features and the artefactual evidence uncovered and recorded in the digital archive were used to inform a further programmes of Archaeological Recording (IC21SOUAR and IC20SOUAR) to fully characterise the potential settlement. The digital archive for Southam may also prove valuable for any future developments in the area.
