This collection comprises text, images, photogrammetry, LiDAR, GIS and vector data from a programme of historic building recording (HBR), equivalent to Historic England’s Level 3 survey, undertaken by Wardell Armstrong in 2020 and 2021. This survey was commissioned by Fusion to record both the physical fabric and setting of Road Barn Farm in Wendover prior to its demolition and permanent changes occurring as a result of construction activities associated with HS2.
A record of the structures and their inter-relationships and setting within the agricultural landscape was prescribed to better reveal the significance of the assets and contribute to GWSI: HERDS objective KC52.
The origins of Road Barn Farm appear to postdate the construction of the turnpike road in 1751 and may have taken the form of a roadside barn, likely the northern element of the surviving courtyard, constructed in the late 18th century. The barn is the earliest of the structures at Road Barn Farm and likely dates to the late 18th century, with the other structures comprising the courtyard thought to date to the early 19th century. The farmhouse was constructed in 1901.
The in-depth analysis of the farmhouse and barns in the course of the demolition of the building gave an insight into the construction of the building as well as allowed us to determine that no older, historic fabric had been re-used within the building. The survey and laser scan preserved the structure for future analysis of its structure and design.
