Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

This collection comprises a digital archive of photographs, scanned site records, and reports from the archaeological recording by Headland Archaeology on land at land west of Culworth Grounds Farm, Northamptonshire. The evaluation was undertaken from March to April 2021.

Project Summary

An archaeological investigation, involving geophysical survey, metal-detecting, and archaeological excavation was carried out at land west of Culworth Grounds Farm, Northamptonshire. The intrusive archaeological fieldwork took place as part of the construction land requirements for the enabling and subsequent main works for HS2 Phase One. The intrusive archaeological works comprised a programme of trial trenching and a phase of mitigation work.

Reuse Value Statement

The prehistoric pottery is the most significant part of the finds assemblage and has the greatest potential in terms of characterising and locating activity at the site. The assemblage from pit [1005] is of particular interest and contains evidence for vessel form as well as an unusual La Tène-style decorated vessel. Further analysis of the fabrics and reference to Oxfordshire Archaeological Unit fabric codes could provide additional information on the source of the clay used in the manufacture of the pottery and would allow easy comparison with other assemblages from the region.

Further proposed work on the pottery is outlined below:

  • Further analysis of pottery fabrics and comparison to local assemblages and fabric series
  • Research and reporting placing the assemblage within its local and regional context
  • Reconstruction of vessels as far as possible to identify forms and aid illustration
  • Illustration of seven vessels profiles including several jar rim profiles and the La Tène decorated vessel. Sherds identified as worth illustrating were noted during assessment recording

There is little potential for further analysis regarding the remaining artefactual and ecological material.
