Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

This collection comprises of photogrammetry, reports, GIS data, spreadsheets, images and site records from an archaeological recording carried out by INFRA Archaeology at Waddesdon Land Parcels, Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire between March and August 2021.

Project Summary

The aim of the Archaeological Recording was to identify the extent and character of any surviving archaeological remains within the site. The outcomes of the investigation will define the character, extent, quality, preservation and significance of the archaeology present in order to determine its potential to contribute to specific objectives set out in the GWSI: HERDS.

This part of the Waddesdon landscape has been identified by a previous trenching evaluation as an area of subdivided Roman field system and aims were defined in the Project Plan and LSWSI and are therefore summarised here:

  • To investigate the nature and date of the settlement activity and to establish the extent and define the nature of the Roman agrarian landscape.
  • To provide further understanding of any undated features across the Site and establish a date for their use.
  • To understand any possible impact of the later phases (medieval/post-medieval) of agricultural activity on those of an earlier date.

For both land parcels the project plan and Fieldwork Change Control Acceptance Sheet identified that the archaeological investigation may make a contribution to the following objectives set out in the GWSI:

  • KC19: The Romano-British period saw the beginning of a more established infrastructure network. Can we investigate the development of these routes, trackways and roads and the influence they had on landscape change?
  • KC21: Assess the evidence for regional and cultural distinctiveness along the length of the route in the Romano-British period, with particular regard to the different settlement types encountered along the route.
  • KC23: Identify evidence for late Roman occupation and attempt to identify any continuity in settlement patterns between the end of the Romano-British period and the Early Medieval period.
  • KC28: Establish the relationship between the Romano-British small town at Fleet Marston, its rural hinterland and wider networks of communication and settlement.

Re-Use Value Statement

The site produced evidence of Prehistoric to Roman features, with the majority dating to the Late Iron Age/Early Romano period. These features include enclosure ditch systems, circular paddocks, corn dryer, stone floored structure, and a trackway. Human remains are present in the form of a single inhumation and disarticulated remains. Given these results integration of the sites dataset into regional research frameworks would be beneficial.

The following further analysis of the dataset is also recommended:

  • C14 analysis of all human remains.
  • Additional study of the burnt clay assemblage to help add further understanding to research aims KC18, KC15, and KC21.
  • Full photography and illustration of the Roman small finds, and basic recording and illustration of the other small finds.
  • Refining of the sites stratigraphic information, including matrices, phasing and finds groupings.
