North-west facing oblique shot of the three blister hangars at Riverside Business Park

This collection comprises images from Historic Building Recording of three blister hangars at Riverside Business Park, Buxton Road, Bakewell. This work was undertaken May to June 2022 by Archaeological Research Services Ltd and was commissioned by Litton Property Group. The historic building recording was required to assist in discharging condition 10 for a proposed development, which would see the demolition of the blister hangars.

The three blister hangars appear to have been constructed on the Lumford Mill site after the Second World War, and were likely purchased as Ministry of Supply surplus.

The width of the large access doors of the brick-built eastern elevation of the structures would not have been wide enough to allow small-span aircraft access into the hangers. This suggests that the brick walls had likely been built to facilitate an industrial use. Furthermore, the Lumford Mills site does not appear to have ever sat in the context of an airfield, which further supports this. The buildings therefore represent an adapted example of a blister hanger design, which do not fall under the three distinct types. However, the structures follow the general unique design and formation of the recognised types of blister hangar. The buildings represent large and expansive hangers, which feature the standardized roof structure seen within the official types of blister hangars. This comprises the latticed steel ribs supported by vertical arch supports. The blister hangars are larger in size than the recognised standard 'Extra Over Blister', being c.87ft in width and c.69ft in length. The western walls of the hangars are constructed of the corrugated sheeting, and each feature an original personnel door and two louvre style vents.
