Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

This collection comprises of image, text, spreadsheet and GIS data from an archaeological excavation at Lower Thorpe Farmhouse, Northamptonshire. The work was undertaken February to June 2022.

Project Summary:

The archaeological Construction Integrated Recording (CIR) was required to mitigate the impact of site clearance, topsoil strip and other ground disturbance activities, including watercourse diversions on the archaeological remains within the Site. The general aim of the archaeological recording was to locate, identify, characterise, date and record the nature of the archaeological resource ahead of the construction of HS2 Phase 1 Central.

The aims of the fieldwork were:

  • to confirm the presence/absence, extent and depth of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site;
  • to determine the nature, date, condition, state of preservation, complexity and significance of any archaeological remains;
  • to determine the likely range, quality and quantity of artefactual and environmental evidence present;
  • to record in plan and section any archaeological remains; and
  • to contribute to the delivery of GWSI: HERDS specific objectives detailed in the FCCF.

The archaeological recording sought to contribute to the following Generic Written Scheme of Investigation (GWSI): Historic Environment Research and Delivery Strategy (HERDS) site-specific objectives:

  • KC33: Investigate the development of water mills from the Anglo Saxon through to the modern period. How did the technology of milling change, and what implications did this have for farming practice?
  • KC34: Undertake research and investigation into medieval manorial complexes. What was their origin, development, and impact on the landscape.

Re-Use Value Statement:

The location, extent, survival and significance of any heritage assets of archaeological interest on this site have been captured in this dataset. This can inform future research into the archaeology and practices within the site and surrounding landscape, but also for the county as a whole.
