Introduction

This collection comprises reports, photographs, context sheets, site plans, section drawings, harris matrices, GIS data, photogrammetry data and an archive decision record from archaeological works at Sedrup Farm and land east of Bishopstone, Buckinghamshire. Work was carried out by MOLA Northampton between June 2020 and April 2022 and forms part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.

Project Summary

The Archaeological Recording at Sedrup Farm and Land East of Bishopstone consisted of eight Archaeological Recording areas, 21 Trial Trenches, two geoarchaeological Trenches and six geoarchaeological test pits. They form part of a large scheme of works located along a 1.37km section of the HS2 scheme to the southwest of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The Site Code for these works is 1C20SFBAR.

The aims and objectives of the project were: to identify the extent and character of any surviving archaeological remains within the site. The outcomes of the investigation will define the character, extent, quality, preservation, and significance of the archaeology present. More specifically the aims were:

  • To confirm and record the presence/absence, extent and depth of any surviving archaeological remains within the Site.
  • To determine the nature, date, condition, state of preservation, complexity and significance of any archaeological remains.
  • To determine and understand the range, quality and quantity of artefactual and environmental evidence present.
  • To provide further understanding of the undated features across the Site and establish a date for their use.
  • To understand the impact of the earlier phases of settlement activity on those of a later date.
  • To confirm and record the presence, extent of any Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman settlement activity.
  • To confirm and record the presence and extent of any further human remains aside from those identified at the previous stages of Trial Trench Evaluation.
