This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation at Widham Farm, Purton, Wiltshire carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in April 2022. A total of 10 trenches were excavated.
The evaluation recorded an intensive concentration of Roman features in the north-western part of the site, including ditches, pits/postholes and probable occupation spreads. Patches of stone may also represent the remnants of surfacing/trackways. Large quantities of pottery were recovered from this area, the majority of which dated to the mid/later 1st-2nd centuries AD. The nature of the finds assemblage is suggestive of domestic activity, although small quantities of ironworking slag recovered from Trench 2 may indicate some limited industrial activity.
While it was clear that the main concentration of Roman activity was within the north-western part of the site, a small number of outlying Roman ditches were also recorded. There were also some undated ditches which may also be Roman in date, although there was no clear evidence for this. At least one ditch and a possible broad furrow were probably medieval in date.
