This archive contains images, site records and CAD from an archaeological watching brief at 76 Union Street, Harthill, Harthill with Woodall, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Sheffield City Region, England, United Kingdom. The purpose of the watching brief was to record any archaeological and palaeoenvironmental remains encountered during groundworks for the permitted house extension.

The topsoil was stripped away to the required depth and the extent of the extension. The topsoil was stripped away to the required depth and the extent of the extension. The footings for the foundations were then dug down to the natural clay. A layer of material was discovered below the modern garden soils and build-up deposits that contained within it shaped and faced building stone, stone rubble, pottery and animal bone. The earliest pottery was represented by 7 sherds of 18th-century Staffordshire Slipware, with the bulk 61 remaining sherds dated to the 19th-20th centuries. The layer suggested that a shed, outhouse or boundary wall was demolished in the period 1854-1893, and that this material had subsequently been redeposited in the early 20th century incorporating modern material with residual late post-medieval finds. There was no evidence for medieval occupation or to substantiate a medieval building plot.
