This collection comprises reports, photographs, excavation records and post-excavation data from an Archaeological Trial Trenching evaluation carried out between December 2021 and September 2022 by Connect Archaeology as part of the A358 Taunton to Southfields Dualling Scheme. The area covered by archaeological works comprised approximately 236ha of agricultural land, encompassing parts of the M5 from Taunton in the north-west to the Southfields Roundabout in the south-east.

The archaeological evaluation aimed to identify, investigate, and record any buried remains within those areas to be affected by the proposed development. Geophysical anomalies identified in an earlier survey were targeted, and innovative techniques and methodologies were employed to disclose the changing patterns of settlement and land-use in this part of the South West. The results of the works (document no. HE551508-CON-GEN-ZZ-RP-ZM-000034) aimed to situate any identified remains within the context of previous and current land use, with a specific focus on explicating the interaction between historic settlement activity and landscape exploitation.
