This collection comprises images from the watching brief carried out by Eden Heritage Ltd. prior to the demolition of the Former Punchbowl Inn in Churchtown.
The archaeological watching brief was undertaken over two days on 30th May 2022 and 17th February 2023. Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the removal of concrete slab and demolition of the foundations of the modern additions to the sides and rear of the former inn, including the cellar. The watching brief also monitored the excavation of a service trench to the north of the building, ground reduction to south of the building and landscaping.
The remains of a wall foundation were identified on the south side of the site during the archaeological watching brief at the former Punchbowl Inn. This is believed to relate to an earlier structure, which was apparently demolished in the late 19th century when the inn was redeveloped. The stone wall may have been the south wall of the earlier building, which is depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1847 but had gone by the time of the 1891 Ordnance Survey map. Stone rubble was also revealed during the watching brief in a service trench to the north of the former inn and during ground reduction to the south, along with deposits of red brick and roofing slate which appear to relate to a modern extension. The demolition rubble had apparently been used to raise the level of the former carpark. A former cobbled yard surface was also identified to the north and south sides of the former inn, which had subsequently been covered in tarmac.
