This collection comprises specialist reports, images, site records, spreadsheets and GIS data from trial trenching between Long Itchington and River Leam, Stratford on Avon. Work was carried out by Connect Archaeology between August and December 2018 as part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.
An archaeological evaluation was carried out for HS2 in advance of enabling works and subsequent main works carried out as part of the enabling works programme between Long Itchington and River Leam, which is located across the Warwick and Stratford-Upon-Avon Districts of Warwickshire. A total of 244 trenches were excavated across the area, as well as two contingency areas at the south end of the area. Surviving archaeological features were identified at both the north and south ends of the area. At the north end the remains of two separate enclosure systems, with part of a probable Iron Age dated enclosure, and a later probable Romano-British dated enclosure were identified. At the south end features probably related to an Iron Age dated enclosure were identified.
The Long Itchington evaluations can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value.
The site has value on its own as it identified two separate enclosure systems, a probable Iron Age enclosure, probable Romano-British dated enclosure, as well as further Iron Age related features. This evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain.
