This collection comprises reports, site photographs, scanned site records, GIS data and post-excavation spreadsheet data from archaeological recording at Mercote Marsh Farm. Work was undertaken between May and June 2020 as part of Phase One of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project.
Archaeological mitigation works were carried out by Connect Archaeology at Mercote Marsh Farm. The mitigation area had previously been subject to trial trenching which had uncovered a possible Middle to Late Iron Age rural settlement at the west of the mitigation area, and a potential Iron Age - Romano-British field system at the east. The mitigation excavation confirmed the presence of an enclosed rural Iron Age settlement, with associated interior features, and an exterior contemporary field system to the north and east. The settlement was dated to the Iron Age/ Late Iron Age (IA/LIA). Roman pottery was identified in later deposits and some discrete features also.
The Mercote Marsh Farm mitigation work can be considered as part of the wider HS2 archive and as such has re-use value.
The site has value on its own as it identified a possible Middle to Late Iron Age rural settlement and Iron Age – Romano-British field system. This evidence contributes to the corpus of such sites in Britain.
